Catherine of Aragon was the first wife of Henry VIII, as well as the wife whom he was married to the longest. Catherine dearly loved Henry, and was obviously heartbroken when Henry requested for an annulment of their marriage. His reason? Catherine did not bear him a son, only a daughter named Mary. Henry VIII even broke from the Catholic Church to finally declare the marriage invalid, and Catherine was called "Princess Dowager" instead of "Queen".... but Catherine, a devout Catholic, refused to comply, worried that she would be sinning against God and that her daughter Mary would be declared a bastard. Despite the poor treatment her husband gave her, Catherine spared him from harsh words, and wrote to him on her deathbed that she had always loved him. It was a sad ending for this obstinate, if forgiving, woman.
